A handover form records what was paid, the condition disclosed and when the buyer took possession. Complete it alongside the sale agreement and OneMotoring transfer.
For a normal private sale, the seller starts the transfer and the buyer confirms it. LTA requires transfer within seven days of physical possession. Arrange payment and completed transfer together before releasing the car where possible; the deadline is not a reason to leave ownership unresolved. LTA’s transfer rules.
A private agreement can record responsibilities between the parties. It does not automatically redirect fines, bind authorities or remove liability imposed by law.

The parties agree that vehicle-use costs arising after the recorded handover time will be borne by the buyer, to the extent permitted by law. They will cooperate with any official request to identify the driver. This agreement does not replace the LTA transfer or override legal obligations.

Complete these checks before releasing the car
- Verify payment through your bank. A buyer’s screenshot is not confirmation of cleared funds.
- Confirm financing is discharged. An informal promise to take over instalments does not release the seller from the loan.
- Complete the official transfer. The buyer needs appropriate motor insurance for the transfer and use of the vehicle.
- Record condition and possession. Keep the signed form, relevant photographs and payment/transfer confirmations together.
Use the buyer’s required identity details securely for the official transaction. The copyable record does not require a photocopy of either person’s identity card.
What the form can and cannot establish
An odometer entry records mileage at handover; it does not prove that every mechanical component was sound.
Similarly, “as-is” wording is not a blanket defence to misrepresentation or other legal obligations. Record known issues and agreed repairs clearly instead of relying on that phrase alone.
If payment or handover is staged, put the dates, conditions and responsibilities in the sale agreement before proceeding. This form is the completion record.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the handover form the ownership transfer?
No. The OneMotoring process changes the registered owner. The form records the transaction and possession.
Is three working days the official transfer deadline?
No. LTA states seven days from physical possession. Completing transfer at handover avoids leaving a gap.
Does signing make every later fine the buyer’s problem automatically?
No. The record may help establish who possessed or used the car, but authorities apply the relevant law and procedures. Respond to notices promptly.
Who keeps the signed form?
Both parties. Retain a legible copy with the sale agreement, payment evidence and LTA confirmation.
